Patti Smith does The Who (musically...)

“Carnegie Hall, I apologize for what I’m about to do,” said surprise guest Patti Smith last night at a Who tribute concert at the famed New York venue before launching into a snarling punk version of “My Generation,” during which she spit on the hallowed stage at least three separate times. (Iggy Pop did some damage to the very same stage at the last week.) Earlier in the night, Bobby McFerrin did the same song, though he used no instrument other than his mouth and the sound of his hand banging against his chest. Patti’s was stronger (mainly because it didn’t bear resemblance to the Cosby Show theme), but it proved that the Who’s vast catalog is strong enough to survive nearly any re-interpretation.

Unearthed Stones tracks coming on "Exile" reissue.

The Rolling Stones’ classic Exile in Main Street — one of Rolling Stone’s highest-ranking "Greatest Albums of All Times" — is returning as a very special reissue. On May 18th, Universal is re-releasing the album with 10 never-before-heard tracks, including “Plundered My Soul,” “Dancing in the Light,” “Following the River” and “Pass the Wine,” that were produced by Jimmy Miller, the Glimmer Twins and Don Was. The disc also features alternate versions of “Soul Survivor” and “Loving Cup.”

You'll need to "buy five copies for your mother!"

Peter Gabriel won't attend Genesis' induction to Rock Hall.

When the members of Genesis reunite next month at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Peter Gabriel won’t be by their side. Rock Hall president Joel Peresman announced yesterday that Gabriel will not attend the event on March 15th in New York. The news confirms what Gabriel said last month — that he was skeptical about performing with his old bandmates.

“I learned at our last reunion [in 1982] that you can’t just get up there. You have to rehearse,” Gabriel said, noting that he is also in the midst of rehearsing for his own European tour.

That's too bad, Genesis without Peter Gabriel...not cool.

Weekend of 2-13 / 2-14

Ringo's gone Hollywood...sort of.

Ringo Starr returned to the iconic Capitol Records Tower and a gathering of several hundred Beatles fans to celebrate the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Monday night. “I want to thank Capitol Records,” Starr said to cheers, glancing up at the tower. “It’s nice to look at a building that you helped pay for.”

Gotta love Ringo.

More Aerosmith Drama...Ugh!

Steven Tyler’s attorney Skip Miller has sent a letter to Aerosmith’s manager Howard Kaufman threatening legal action if the band makes good on their promise to tour with a new singer. In the letter, Miller asserts that Tyler is synonymous with Aerosmith: “Can you imagine the manager of the Rolling Stones calling for the replacement of Mick Jagger?” Miller writes. “Steven is Aerosmith, along with the others. He’s the guy the public knows. He’s the singer.”

Here's an idea Skip, tell your client to quit acting like a tool.

Weekend of 1-30 / 1-31

The Who's Super Bowl playlist (most of it anyway)

“We’re kinda doing a mashup of stuff,” Townshend told Billboard magazine “A bit of ‘Baba O’Riley,’ a bit of ‘Pinball Wizard,’ a bit of the close of ‘Tommy,’ a bit of ‘Who Are You,’ and a bit of ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again.’ It works — it’s quite a saga.” Noting that the those picks have a “celebratory vibe,” Townshend added he hoped the audience would “go a bit wild if they want to.” Fittingly, since the Super Bowl is airing on CBS, three of those songs — “Who Are You,” “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” — are used in the title sequences of the three CSI series.

Weekend of 1-23 / 1-24

New Jeff Beck disc in stores April 13th!

Two months after Jeff Beck performs at Madison Square Garden along with Eric Clapton, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitarist will release his solo album Emotion & Commotion, his first studio LP in seven years. April 13th’s Emotion will boast both originals and covers, including renditions of Jeff Buckley’s “Corpus Christi Carol,” The Wizard of Oz’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell On You,” featuring Joss Stone on vocals.

Emotion also finds Beck teaming with a 64-piece orchestra for a handful of tracks, like Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 5,” the Atonement score’s “Elegy for Dunkirk” and Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma.”

Rock and Roll meets Classical...should be interesting.

Weekend of 1-16 / 1-17

Jimi Hendrix's final recordings to be released in March.

Nearly 40 years after it was recorded at Jimi Hendrix’s final recording sessions, an unearthed song called “Valleys of Neptune” will featured on a compilation of the same name on March 9th. Valleys of Neptune will include 12 tracks recorded at various studios during Jimi’s final recording sessions while working on his posthumously completed First Rays of the Rising Sun. “Valleys of Neptune,” which was never released commercially but did appear on 1990’s Lifelines: The Jimi Hendrix Story four-disc set, will also be released as a single on February 2nd.

Can't wait!

Weekend of 1-9 / 1-10
